SCS’ Center for Life Long Learning Offers a Plethora of Courses for Active Older Adults
Experts say that staying active and “continuing the learning process” can help older adults improve their cognitive abilities and add to their general overall well-being, both mentally and physically.
Senior Community Services (SCS) believes that it is never too late to learn a new skill or pastime. The Center for Life Long Learning (CLLL) offers an inexpensive and fun way for 50+ adults in Delaware County to remain active, pursue new interests, and meet other like-minded individuals.
CLLL’s typical courses include Computer, UTube Demos, Tai Chi, Yoga, Healthy Living, Sign Language, Spanish, Water Aerobics, Drawing, Digital Photography, Painting, Gardening, Wine Tasting, Belly Dancing, and more. There are also a plethora of informative subjects that will enrich your life and help you to avoid some financial and legal pitfalls. Classes, which are all open to the public, are held at local SCS senior centers, Aston and Concord Community Centers and Brookhaven Municipal Building.
“Each year we look for new and innovative ways to add to our existing courses for older adults,” relates Nikki Panico, Associate Director of SCS. “We strive to bring classes and discussion topics that are of special concern and interest to people in that age category, so that there is something for everyone.”
According to Business Week Online, “experts in education and gerontology say that as baby boomers age and approach retirement, the number of retired Americans who are spending time—or planning to—on educational pursuits is growing fast. The trend is driven by such factors as increased longevity, people enjoying more years of good health, and a growing realization by many that a retirement in passivity is not only boring but can lead to atrophy of both mind and body.”
The Center for Life Long Learning is one of many ways SCS honors its commitment to keep older adults living independently in the community, helping them to stimulate their minds and bodies by discovering new and enriching life experiences.
